Interior Design Education Round Table: Thinking into the Future
The IFI roundtable discussions are designed to foster an open dialogue around important issues that percolate from the local, regional and national constituencies into the global arena. These conversations aspire to engender broader and deeper common understanding of the field and practice of interior architecture/interior design (such terms being used interchangeably) by exploring topical and pertinent facets of this discipline around the world.
The New York-07 Round Table centered on the intersection of education and research with the practice of interior architecture/interior design. While Thinking into the Future primarily focused on educational aspects of the discipline and practice, we hoped to encourage the broadest discussion of this and related issues.
This report comprises the one-and-a-half days of presentations, including the discussions and three submitted papers.
As a global entity, IFI seeks to foster an ever increasing depth and breadth of knowledge and understanding of interior architecture/ interior design. The organization desires to be inclusive and to build a consensus among countries, groups and individuals.
We hope that this report will provide insight and further this understanding.

International Interiors Annual 2007
The IFI Yearbook is seen as a means of archiving the works of members through the years, works that identify the role of the interior architect/designer in society. Through these projects, IFI celebrates with its members the regional spirit and cultural diversity of our members and our professional pursuits.
This yearbook separates the projects through the various categories that make up the field of work of Interior Architects and Interior Designers. It showcases projects affecting all aspect of society, from the home, to hospitality, the workplace environment, health care, public buildings, institutional projects and spaces through to aged care, projects that also deal with universal design and sustainability.
The projects in this yearbook are relevant to society as it is experienced in a global arena today, in a modern world where cultural mix is less evident in an increasingly internationalized society.

Interior Design: the State of the Art
The design disciplines are commonly defined as processes, not outcomes or products. It is assumed that the products explain themselves. But what is Interior Architecture? Does it exist? What standards should it meet? Would defining the product help us clarify the common understanding of the field and the position it holds between architectue and the broad design disciplines? Could such a definition add to the understanding of interior design education and practice?
The IFI Round Table Conference, Interior Design: the state of the art aims to bring together professionals and educators from various parts of the world to explore and discuss the State of the Art in Interior Architecture/ Design, and to formulate a directive opinion to fuel the world-wide debate on the position of the profession. Through discussing the identity of the field, we want to explore how new directions and challenges like multi disciplines and research & development can strengthen the historic bond between the academic world and the profession at large.

WORLD INTERIORS DAY_WID 2009 “Interiors that Last”
The 2009 theme for World Interior Day is “Interiors that Last.” The 21st century has seen a constant evolution of change, and this World Interiors Day, we will look at the places and spaces that have stood the test of time. Either by their adaptability or in the high standard of original quality, these places have remained usable or enjoyable as much today as when they were originally designed.
WORLD INTERIORS DAY is an international event created to provide an occasion to highlight the merits of the interior professions and their impact on the quality of life. It’s a day to actively engage professionals, design enthusiasts and the public at large to explore their creativity, imagination, vision and passion in recognition of the role of interior architecture and design in our society. To view the events associated with last year’s theme of “Identity” please visit our website at www.ifiworld.org.

We therefore ask you to assemble interior works of your member interior designers, or interior designers in your country, as well as non-members whose project is nationally renowned or awarded interiors and is recommended by its national association. The submissions can be the results of a local competition or submitted interiors that are approved by your associations, the submitted projects shall be limited to the projects either designed or constructed between January 2007 and December 2008.

Interior Design: the State of the Art was a special meeting convened in June 2006 in Singapore to discuss topical issues for the field around the globe. The intention with this gathering of world experts involved in the education and practice of the profession was to question, debate and arrive at a better understanding of the state of the art of Interior Design, and what the field represents today and into the future. An initiative mandated to investigate best practices in the education of Interior Architects/Designers. The intention is to investigate discipline specific as well as collaborative trends, understand local realities within the global context, and propose protocols, curriculum models and professional frameworks that are pro-active and descriptive.
The process was started with the introduction of a Terms of Reference document during April 2006, followed by formal discussions in Busan, Korea during November 2006, and in London during January 2007. Our next workshop takes place at RMIT in Melbourne, Australia during April, and leading to a round table discussion scheduled for New York City during July 2007.
This is part of similar debates within the IFI dealing with the profession, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and other strategic initiatives aimed at serving members and the profession globally. An ever-wider network of world experts involved in both education and practice are contributing to the forum. The Education Working Group of IFI invite all participating members and non-members involved in academic institutions to contribute to the debate.
