IFI Endorsed Guangzhou Design Week 2007- IFI President's Address

I would like to thank the organizers of Guangzhou Design Week, for inviting me for this function, and address this august gathering, and would like to extend warm greetings and best wishes on behalf of myself and the executive committee of IFI. Although I have visited different parts and Regions of China earlier, this is my first visit to Guangzhou, I am amazed by the scale and magnitude of the activity organised by organisers.

Last two days I have met several of the officials and also met Mayor of the City, and am very happy to note that the top officials of the city are taking a very keen interest in promoting Design for the betterment of the city. It is a very happy and welcome indication.

IFI Endorsed Interiors Malaysia 2008

There has never been a better time for the property, building and interior design industries in Malaysia. Globalization, coupled with socio-economic prosperity, has brought to the forefront the innate talent, creativity, imagination and professionalism of Malaysian interior designers and architects. The increased interests in luxury living and complementary home and soft furnishing also fuel the boom.

Building on the successful debut in 2007, INTERIOR Malaysia 2008 continues to pay tribute to the country’s homegrown talents, while at the same time, challenging norms and creating impact on the many different approaches which can be taken via the artful use of interior design.

IFI World Interiors Day 2008

WORLD INTERIORS DAY is the international event created to provide an occasion to highlight the merits of the interior professions and their impact on the quality of life. It’s a day to actively engage professionals, design enthusiasts and the public at large to explore their creativity, imagination, vision and passion in recognition of the role of interior architecture and design in our society.

IFI is the Global organization of interior architects and designer’s organizations, representing over 70 member associations and more than 65,000 interior architects and designers in 45 countries on all the worlds continents. IFI is proud to announce WORLD INTERIORS DAY 2008.

This year’s theme is Identity:

The need for an ‘emotional culture’ in our living environment is rising. In a nice and stimulating environment people experience more engagement, more pleasure, satisfaction and success. Work becomes relaxation, effort becomes challenge. People have a need for association, expression, memories and beauty. They want to identify themselves with their environment. Well designed interiors give room for self-development and self-fulfillment. Offer freedom and space for new perspectives, for improvisation, spontaneity, vision and imagination. Interior architects and designers all over the world are engaged every day in adding value to our homes, workplaces and living environment. With their understanding of space, comfort, sustainability, functionality and above all beauty, they shape places that identify us.

Interior Design: the State of the Art was a special meeting convened in June 2006 in Singapore to discuss topical issues for the field around the globe. The intention with this gathering of world experts involved in the education and practice of the profession was to question, debate and arrive at a better understanding of the state of the art of Interior Design, and what the field represents today and into the future. IFI invite all participating members to participate in this ongoing debate.

IFI President

An initiative mandated to investigate best practices in the education of Interior Architects/Designers. The intention is to investigate discipline specific as well as collaborative trends, understand local realities within the global context, and propose protocols, curriculum models and professional frameworks that are pro-active and descriptive.

The process was started with the introduction of a Terms of Reference document during April 2006, followed by formal discussions in Busan, Korea during November 2006, and in London during January 2007. Our next workshop takes place at RMIT in Melbourne, Australia during April, and leading to a round table discussion scheduled for New York City during July 2007.

This is part of similar debates within the IFI dealing with the profession, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and other strategic initiatives aimed at serving members and the profession globally. An ever-wider network of world experts involved in both education and practice are contributing to the forum. The Education Working Group of IFI invite all participating members and non-members involved in academic institutions to contribute to the debate.

To do so, please contact the office of our Secretary General Swoo K. Suh at info@ifiworld.org
